Is biodegradable PLA plastic food packaging safe?

Your biodegradable PLA plastic food packaging isn't as harmless as the label suggests. A 2026 study published in PLoS Biology found that polylactic acid (PLA) releases oligomeric lactic acid (OLA) nanoplastics that can easily breach the placental barrier.

Researchers discovered that these nanoplastics accumulate in fetal organs and disrupt the GATA2 transcription factor. This interference blocks essential vascular development, leading to intrauterine growth restriction in a mouse model. We are being told these materials are the eco-friendly solution, but they are shedding particles that actively obstruct critical biological pathways during pregnancy.

The industry is banking on you assuming that biodegradable means biologically inert. It does not. If you are trying to minimize your exposure to endocrine-disrupting materials, it is time to stop trusting plastic labels regardless of their marketing claims. We recommend moving toward glass, stainless steel, or silicone for food storage. You can find our tested non-toxic kitchen alternatives here to replace the plastic currently leaching into your meals.
