The Hidden Risk in Your Humidifier
If you use a disinfectant in your humidifier to keep it clean, stop. A 2026 study published in Cancer Epidemiology found that exposure to humidifier disinfectants is linked to a 5.71 times higher risk of developing lung cancer compared to those who don't use them. The study analyzed data from over 150,000 people and found the danger persists even in never-smokers.
What the Data Shows
The numbers are stark. Among the group exposed to these disinfectants, the incidence of lung cancer was 2.58%, compared to just 0.55% in the non-exposed group. For women, the hazard ratio was even higher at 12.61. Researchers concluded that these products have clear, potential carcinogenic effects when aerosolized and inhaled in your living space.
