Humans Are Losing the Ability to Reproduce Naturally

Fewer humans can get pregnant without medical help. And the trend is getting worse with every decade.
A New Way to Measure the Problem
A 2026 study in Fertil Steril created a new index called the comprehensive unassisted pregnancy rate. It counts live births and induced abortions, then subtracts births from assisted reproduction. What's left tells you how well a population can conceive on its own.
The answer: not well, and getting worse. Data from several high-income countries shows this rate has been steadily declining across successive decades.
It's Not Just a Lifestyle Choice
Falling birth rates are usually blamed on economics and career priorities. But this study points to something biological. More couples are dealing with poor semen quality and female infertility. The number of babies born through assisted reproduction keeps climbing.
When you strip away the social factors and just look at the biology, humans are becoming less fertile.
What's Behind the Decline
The researchers point to environmental and chemical exposures as likely contributors. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals in everyday products affect sperm production, egg quality, and hormone balance. These exposures start in the womb and accumulate over a lifetime.
What You Can Do
Reduce your daily chemical exposure. Avoid plastics with food, filter your water, and choose personal care products without hormone-disrupting ingredients. Browse non-toxic home essentials for practical swaps that lower your exposure.
