How Formaldehyde in Your Home Triggers Childhood Leukemia

Researchers just mapped the exact molecular pathway that formaldehyde uses to turn normal blood cells into childhood leukemia. And formaldehyde is in your furniture, building materials, and household products right now.
The Mechanism Revealed
A 2026 study in Environ Pollut identified a specific signaling axis called RUNX1-ISX that formaldehyde activates in B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) cells. This axis drives a cascade of cancer-promoting genes (YBX2, HES2, FOXH1, MYCL, FOS, and PBX4) that reprogram cells toward malignancy.
In animal models, formaldehyde exposure through this pathway promoted actual tumor formation. When researchers blocked the RUNX1-ISX axis with drugs, the cancer-promoting effects significantly decreased.
Confirmed in Human Samples
The researchers validated their findings in human tissue. The RUNX1-ISX connection was confirmed in pediatric B-ALL samples, and its expression correlated with poor prognosis.
Formaldehyde Is Everywhere
Formaldehyde is used in plywood, particleboard, MDF furniture, carpet adhesives, paint, and cleaning products. New furniture and building materials off-gas formaldehyde for months or years. That new furniture smell? That's formaldehyde.
Children breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults. They spend more time on the floor. They're exposed to higher relative doses of whatever is in the indoor air.
How to Protect Your Family
Choose solid wood or formaldehyde-free furniture. Ventilate new furniture and building materials before use. Use a HEPA air purifier. Avoid pressed wood products. Browse non-toxic home essentials for safer alternatives.
