Researchers studied 941 preschoolers and found that kids who ate more food additives had higher body fat. Not because they ate more calories. Because of what was in the food.

What the Research Found

A 2026 study in Pediatric Obesity looked at food additive consumption patterns in Chilean children aged 4 to 6 years old. They tracked what these kids ate and measured their adiposity (body fat).

Kids with higher exposure to food additives had worse dietary indicators and higher body fat. The researchers identified distinct consumption patterns and found clear associations between additive-heavy diets and adiposity in preschoolers.

Additives Are in Everything Kids Eat

Think about what most kids eat: flavored yogurt, juice boxes, crackers, cereal, chicken nuggets. Almost all of it is loaded with emulsifiers, artificial colors, preservatives, and flavor enhancers. These aren't just "inactive ingredients." They're affecting how kids' bodies store fat.

And kids are especially vulnerable. Their bodies are smaller, their metabolisms are still developing, and they eat more food relative to their body weight than adults do.

What You Can Do

Read the ingredient list, not just the nutrition facts. The fewer additives, the better. Stick to whole foods when you can. Cut the packaged snacks and swap in fruits, veggies, and simple homemade options.
