The global epidemic of fatty liver disease isn't just about diet. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals in your everyday environment are driving it. A new review calls it an emerging public health challenge.
What the Review Found
A 2026 review examined the connection between environmental endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) exposure and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The evidence is strong enough that the authors call it an emerging public health challenge.
EDCs like BPA, phthalates, PFAS, and pesticides disrupt fat metabolism, insulin signaling, and liver function. Combined with modern diets, they create a perfect storm for fatty liver.
What You Can Do
Reduce EDC exposure: ditch plastic, filter water, eat organic, use non-toxic products. Support liver health with a whole-foods diet, regular exercise, and minimal alcohol.
