Endocrine-disrupting chemicals may be contributing to COPD, one of the leading causes of death worldwide. A genomic study found the connection.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study integrating genomic and exposomic data identified endocrine disruptors potentially associated with COPD. The study cross-referenced genetic susceptibility with chemical exposure data and found that certain EDCs increase COPD risk.
COPD is usually blamed on smoking, but many non-smokers develop it too. Environmental chemical exposure may be the missing piece of the puzzle for millions of cases.
What You Can Do
Reduce EDC exposure. Avoid fragranced products. Use non-toxic cleaners. Filter indoor air. If you have breathing problems, consider whether chemical exposure at home or work could be a factor.
