The pesticide chlorpyrifos accelerates Alzheimer's disease by disrupting a biochemical pathway in the gut that connects to the brain. The damage starts in your intestines and ends in your memory.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study in Environment International used Alzheimer's model mice to show that chlorpyrifos dysregulates the arginine biosynthesis pathway and worsens Alzheimer's progression through the microbiota-gut-brain axis.
Chlorpyrifos disrupts gut bacteria, which alters arginine metabolism, which sends harmful signals up to the brain. The result: faster cognitive decline in animals already predisposed to Alzheimer's.
Chlorpyrifos Lingers
Chlorpyrifos was banned for most food uses in the US in 2021, but it persists in soil, water, and homes near agricultural areas. It's still used in some countries. If you grew up near farms, you may have accumulated exposure that's still affecting your health.
What You Can Do
Buy organic produce, especially if you live near agricultural areas. Support your gut health with fiber and fermented foods. If you have a family history of Alzheimer's, minimizing pesticide exposure is one factor within your control.
