One chemical at a time, you might be fine. Mix PFAS, cadmium, lead, and phthalates together, and your thyroid disease risk nearly triples.

The Mixture Effect on Your Thyroid

A 2026 study in Ecotoxicol Environ Saf analyzed 1,847 adults from NHANES, measuring their exposure to PFAS, heavy metals, and phthalates simultaneously. The combined mixture showed an odds ratio of 2.74 for thyroid disease.

Five chemicals drove 68% of the total mixture effect: a PFAS metabolite called 2-(N-methyl-PFOSA) acetate (the biggest contributor at 28%), followed by perfluorohexanesulfonic acid, blood cadmium, blood lead, and a phthalate metabolite.

Older Adults Are Hit Hardest

Machine learning analysis revealed a stark age effect. People over 63 years old had 80% higher predicted risk at high exposure levels compared to younger adults. Decades of accumulated chemical exposure combined with an aging thyroid create a compounding problem.

Why Your Thyroid Matters

Your thyroid controls metabolism, energy, heart rate, and body temperature. When it malfunctions, everything from weight to mood to cardiovascular health goes sideways.

How to Protect Your Thyroid

Filter your water for PFAS and metals. Reduce phthalate sources (plastic food containers, fragranced products). Don't smoke (cadmium source). And swap household products for non-toxic home essentials to lower your total chemical mixture.
