The BPS Problem

You probably checked your plastic bottles and containers for a BPA-free label. It turns out that swap might be doing more harm than good. A 2026 study published in Environmental Research found that Bisphenol S (BPS)—the most common replacement for BPA—is linked to significant cardiac remodeling and heart damage. Researchers exposed subjects to BPS doses as low as 4 μg/kg/day and observed pathological changes in heart tissue, including increased mass and wall thickness.

What the Data Shows

The study didn't just find minor issues. It showed that BPS overactivates the classical renin-angiotensin system, which is a major driver of cardiovascular disease. The exposure led to increased plasma cholesterol, ER stress, and a pro-fibrotic profile where collagen builds up in the heart. Even at low doses, the chemical triggered inflammation and structural changes that suggest your BPA-free plastic is anything but safe.

How to Protect Your Home

The industry standard of swapping one bisphenol for another isn't working. The only way to avoid these endocrine-disrupting chemicals is to move away from plastic entirely, especially for food and drink. Start by replacing your plastic storage and kitchen tools with glass, stainless steel, or wood. You can browse our non-toxic home alternatives to find safer, tested materials that don't leach into your food or impact your heart health.
