Prenatal exposure to common environmental chemicals is linked to a higher risk of precocious puberty in girls. A 2026 study published in Environmental Research tracked maternal exposure to nonylphenol and bisphenols, finding that these substances are significantly associated with the early onset of puberty.

Researchers analyzed data from 87 cases of central precocious puberty and 109 cases of incomplete precocious puberty. They found that exposure to oxo-NP and hydroxy-NP—metabolites of nonylphenol—showed a significant association with these conditions. Specifically, the third quartile of these exposures resulted in an odds ratio of 1.52 for overall precocious puberty. Even at moderate levels, these endocrine disruptors are altering developmental timelines.

You cannot control every chemical in the environment, but you can limit the ones you bring into your home. Start by auditing the plastics in your kitchen and nursery. Swap out polycarbonate plastics and look for glass, stainless steel, or wood. We have curated a list of non-toxic baby alternatives that are tested and free from these common offenders. It is about reducing the total load on your family, one swap at a time.
