Long-term use of artificial sweeteners increases the risk of atherosclerosis. The "healthy" sugar substitute is clogging your arteries.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study found that long-term artificial sweetener exposure increases atherosclerosis risk. Atherosclerosis is the buildup of fatty plaques in your arteries that leads to heart attacks and strokes.
This isn't about one sweetener. The study looked at long-term artificial sweetener use overall. The very products marketed as heart-healthy alternatives to sugar may be contributing to the number one killer worldwide.
What You Can Do
Stop relying on artificial sweeteners. Drink water, black coffee, or unsweetened tea. Use small amounts of real sweeteners if needed. The best beverage is the simplest one.
