Your plastic spatula is likely leaching primary aromatic amines into your dinner. A 2026 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research tested 55 common kitchen utensils and found these chemicals in multiple samples.
Researchers identified 6 different aromatic amines, including aniline, 4,4'-methylenedianiline, and o-toluidine. These substances are classified as carcinogens. A serving spoon tested in the study contained 0.057 mg/kg of aniline, while a crepe spatula showed 0.038 mg/kg. While the study notes concentrations were low, the presence of these compounds in items that touch our food every day is a red flag.
You do not have to keep cooking with plastic. If you want to stop the cycle of leaching, it is time to switch to materials that do not break down under heat. We have curated a collection of non-toxic kitchen alternatives like solid wood and stainless steel that keep your food free from unnecessary chemical migrants. Ditch the plastic and upgrade your tools today.
