Are Air Fryers Safe? Indoor Air Quality and VOCs

After just 70 uses, your air fryer starts polluting your home even when you aren't cooking. A 2026 study found that residues trapped in those hard-to-reach areas cause a 23% increase in VOC emissions and a massive 236% increase in ultrafine particles (UFPs) while the machine is sitting idle.

Researchers tested 12 different dishes and found that air frying isn't just about the food. It's about what the appliance itself is releasing. While high-fat foods trigger the highest particle counts, the real problem is the buildup. That burnt-on gunk in the inaccessible corners of your machine is actively off-gassing into your kitchen air.

We aren't saying you need to stop cooking, but you need to be aware of what your tools are doing to your indoor air quality. If you can't clean the heating element or the interior housing, you are essentially cooking with a source of indoor pollution. It is time to rethink the convenience of these machines.

If you are ready to ditch the plastic-heavy, hard-to-clean gadgets for something safer, we have curated a list of non-toxic kitchen alternatives that don't hide grime or off-gas chemicals into your food. Check your appliance, clean it thoroughly, or consider making a swap.
