Babies exposed to air pollution during pregnancy and early childhood show neurodevelopmental problems. The dirty air is getting into developing brains and changing how they form.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study on gestational and early childhood air pollution found that exposure to air pollutants during pregnancy and the first years of life is associated with worse neurodevelopmental outcomes in early childhood. That includes cognitive delays, behavioral problems, and altered brain development.
The developing brain is especially vulnerable because it's growing faster than at any other point in life. Air pollution particles are small enough to cross the placenta and enter the fetal bloodstream.
What You Can Do
Use HEPA air purifiers at home, especially in the nursery. Check air quality indexes before outdoor activities. Avoid high-traffic areas during pregnancy. Keep windows closed on bad air quality days.
