Organophosphate ester flame retardants attached to PM2.5 air pollution particles are linked to sleep disorders in children. Your kid's bad sleep might not be about screens. It could be the air.

What the Study Found

A 2026 study from the Pearl River Delta found that PM2.5-bound organophosphate esters (OPEs) are associated with childhood sleep disorders. OPEs are flame retardants used in furniture, electronics, and building materials. They attach to fine air particles and get inhaled.

Sleep is critical for children's brain development, immune function, and growth. Chemical disruption of sleep during childhood can have lasting developmental consequences.

What You Can Do

Use HEPA air purifiers in kids' bedrooms. Avoid furniture treated with flame retardants. Check air quality reports. Keep windows closed on bad air quality days.
