What is hiding in your water?

A 2026 study from the Yale School of Public Health found that 32% of tap water samples tested in Long Island, New York, contained 1,4-dioxane. Even more concerning, 24% of those samples exceeded the state’s maximum contaminant level of 1 μg/L. This is a potential carcinogen that is showing up in our homes, our blood, and our bodies. Researchers detected the chemical in 24% of blood samples collected from residents, proving this isn't just an environmental issue—it is a biological one.

The hidden risks in your home

The study found that older homes built before 1960 were significantly more likely to have detectable levels of 1,4-dioxane in their water supply. While the researchers noted that water consumption wasn't the only source, the presence of this chemical in our daily water supply is linked to measurable changes in redox and energy metabolism. We are being exposed to industrial solvents and personal care byproducts in ways we are only beginning to quantify.

Take control of your exposure

You cannot wait for municipal systems to catch up. If you are concerned about what is coming out of your faucet, start by testing your water quality or installing a high-quality filtration system designed to remove industrial contaminants. You can also audit your personal care products to ensure you aren't adding to your chemical load. We have gathered a collection of non-toxic home alternatives to help you reduce your exposure to these persistent pollutants. Stop relying on the default options and start protecting your household today.
